Continuing Education for United States Customs Brokers By Victoria Nicholls
On June 23, 2023, the Federal Register released the final Continuing Education requirement for United States Customs Brokers. This new rule requires Brokers to receive a minimum of 36 hours of continuing education within a 3-year period. This averages to 1 credit hour per month, which will be reported by the Broker beginning on their 2027 triannual report. While the accreditation process has not been completed, CBP has assured the broker community that opportunities to receive the required hours will be provided by Customs through various trainings and events.
While this continuing education requirement is new to Customs Brokers, continuing education requirements have been prevalent in many spheres of professional licenses for years. Professionals such as lawyers, doctors, and accountants have had these requirements associated with their licenses and have proven to be valuable contributions by providing minimum levels of competency and a stressed importance on education. As Untied States Customs Brokers are the front line of defense for United States trade, it is a welcome extension to national security to ensure our brokers are properly educated and engaged in trade rules and regulations. The parameters set for the Continuing Education requirements are minimal yet will add a level of consistency to the Customs Brokers community as a whole.
